Penrose Tile Wall
The Penrose Tile wall was built across the years of 2020 and 2021 during Covid. It was first shown at Burning Man in 2022. The tiling pattern was designed by Sir Richard Penrose in the 1970s. The animations are generated in real time with a set of algorithms that come up in random order and each algorithm has a set of parameters that are loaded randomly. This assures that the animations don't repeat.
There are 900 diamonds that come in 2 shapes. Each diamond has 2 LED clusters behind a stretched fabric diffuser. The software is all custom. It was designed and primarily coded by Chuck Sommerville, with some contributions by Hunter Luisi and Valentin Leon.
It is mostly made out of CNC cut wood and steel unistrut channel. The primary Construction was done by Wayne Fink, with help from Carol Fink, Chuck Sommerville, Jennifer Sommerville, and Tyler Yamamoto.
